This should be considered for backup creation:

• save at least three copies of a file
• on at least two different storage mediums
• with at least one offsite medium (e.g. on another server)

Test file recovery at set up time and on a regular basis to prevent data loss.

Protect your (sensitive) research data:

• protect your hardware; e.g. via a
  • separate lockable room
  • locker for data storage mediums or laptop
  • protection against theft for your laptop
• use file encryption
• keep passwords safe
• at least two people should have access to your data
